The engines regard a link from one page to another as a vote. The more links which fire in to a page the more suitable that page is assumed to be and the ranking rises. Admittedly that is a very simplified breakdown but it’s the essence of ranking.

There are a myriad of different varieties of link. Some perform much better than others for ranking purposes. The choicest links you can get your hands on are in-context plain text links which contain applicable anchor text. Sound complicated? It’s not.
